Four hours before my debut at Sadler's Wells as 'Carmen' and I step out onto the stage to take a snap of the auditorium's glittery steep bank of seating. Back in the dressing room it's all fake tan and false eyelashes for Bizet's eponymous heroine. Director James Hurley has reimagined the fiery gypsy as a modern-day Seville Airport cleaning lady who dreams of escape. The fantastic show zips by and from the Habanera to curtain down feels less three hours and more three minutes.
